The celebrated few,
conquerors and hero’s
alike. So great they took us in this ship,
dark and cramped, pushed our lives in these
quarters and call it home. In search of intelligent
life, of anything as long as it’s better,
better than home. We’re prisoners doing
time, no freedom, trapped in this ship so
small, like inmates in cells.

Scene
1 – I
Remember the Desert
Mye drives, it’s a ‘64 falcon
convertible, through the desert, it’s
hot! All windows are down, the hot wind is
blowing through the car, the radio plays
loud to help drown out the wind. On the road,
in the desert, there is still plenty to see,
the Joshua trees, the rodents scampering
across the road, the hills climbing and falling
in the distance, and the other cars, every
now and then, they come and go, strangers
on this two lane road. Mye doesn’t
smile, but he looks happy, he looks content
driving through the desert, in his element
at the controls and alone.
Memphis’ Voice:
Mye... Mye...
Mye closes his eyes for a moment, does he
hear Memphis?
Memphis’ Voice:
Mye...
Mye
opens his eyes, he’s piloting
Falcon 2, the research based transport ship.
They just left a planet and are headed back
to the Magellan.
Memphis: An asteroid belt, you probably
should be awake for this.
Mye
focus’ for a second, looking out
at the asteroid belt, and then with a cocky
expression on his face
Mye (inside his head
a very shallow ‘bzzzzz’):
I could navigate it with my eyes closed.
Memphis: Let’s
try it first with them open.
Myes face becomes serious.
Mye: Hold on everyone, this is where it
gets fun.
Back in the ship sit 5 crewmembers, tightening
their seat-belts, and clutching restraints.
The engines get louder, Mye is in control
and ship flies through the belt, up and down
left and right, after what appears like a
few close calls. This seems to be a game
to Mye, how close can he come to an asteroid,
when to dodge, he seems to be having a great
time, but confident all the while.
Memphis: Can you pick a straighter line?
Mye: What’s
the fun in that.
Some
of the crew in the back look as if they’re
going to be sick.
Scientist #1: Mye,
can you take it easy up there? Some of
us aren’t doing
so good back here.
Mye does an extra loop around one of the
asteroids, and hits the thrusters to get
out of the belt.
Mye: You got it, Doc.
The ride is now calm and peaceful at a steady
pace. Everyone relaxes a bit, settling in
to enjoy the rest of the ride.
Mye (looking at Memphis): Reminds me of
the desert.
Memphis: The desert?
Mye: The peacefulness.
It’s quiet,
the stars, like the desert at night.
Memphis: It’s
a bit colder then the desert.
Mye: Yeah, but it’s
quiet, and it makes me feel calm.
Memphis: Your piloting
didn’t seem
to calm.
Mye just laughs, and Memphis smiles at Mye.
The chatter on the
box increases as Falcon 2 closes in on
Magellan. Magellan’s
receiving doors open and lights floods from
the compartment, as two arms extend outwards
waiting for Falcon 2. Falcon 2 approaches
slowly, Mye and Memphis looking up into the
bay, slowly maneuvering their ship, until
the computer takes over control, and the
arms from Magellan take hold of Falcon 2
and pull it upwards into her belly, slowly
the outer receiving doors close, and the
room is re-pressurized, then the inner receiving
doors slide open and Falcon 2 is brought
up to the docking bay, where more arms guide
her to her berth. In the docking bay a couple
of people go about receiving the ship, hooking
up electrical cords, fuel cords, and locking
Falcon 2 in place. In the Background Falcon
1 sits, and from a door Captain Morrison
arrives, with a couple of Scientist. Morrison
shakes Mye’s hand, Memphis beside him
and the Scientist continue on to Falcon 2
to help remove samples.
Morrison: Welcome back, sounds like you
had a successful mission.
Mye: If you count
investigating a dead rock as successful,
then you’re right.
Morrison: You made
it back without anything bad to report,
that’s successful.
Mye: I swear we picked
the short straw when it came to regions
to explore, there’s
just nothing out here.
Morrison: It could be worse.
They start towards the door, Morrison drops
back and puts his arm around Memphis, and
gives her a quick kiss. Now Mye walks out
first with Morrison and Memphis behind him.
